This gentle form of Yoga is done in a chair, or with the support of a chair. If you would like to experience a FREE taster session of Chair Yoga, open to everyone looking for exercise in and/or supported by a chair, or know someone who might benefit from these gentle exercise sessions, please get in touch with me to book a free trial at one of my three weekly Chair Yoga classes in Somerset. You can click on the button below, e-mail me at adelerobertsonyoga@gmail.com or call: 07790 004423 and leave a message and I'll get back to you if I'm teaching. Please note Evercreech Village Hall and Wells Town Hall have wheelchair access and a disabled toilet. The Pilton venue has some steps to access the room and no disabled toilet.
Growing evidence suggests yoga can be a valuable complement to many conditions as we age, and in addition to medication, to support people living with neurological conditions such as Parkinson's. Yoga works on many levels, physical and emotional. Practices found to be helpful include: joint mobilisation; exercises that strengthen and stretch; balances and relaxation; breathing practices (pranayama) and meditation.
Specific benefits that people with Parkinson's may experience with regular practice include:
- Facilitating relaxation to help reduce tremor and muscle tension
- activating under‑used muscle groups
- assisting proprioception, developing a clearer sense of body position and how the body moves through space
- Core stiffness can make it difficult to walk across a room or stand upright; Yoga eases stiffness with gentle, restorative twists and core‑strengthening postures that improve mobility
- Yoga can help reduce some of the fatigue and sleep difficulties associated with the condition and its treatments, supporting energy levels and resilience.
"After the Chair Yoga class, we were all pleasantly surprised with what we were able to do in a chair and that the session was appropriate for our abilities and experience. We were relieved not to have been asked to lie on the floor on a Yoga mat or put our legs behind our head!"
